Introduction to Computer-Based Instruction

Overview

This course explores various facets of the application of computers to the teaching-learning process. Topics include a brief history of educational computing, an overview of the contemporary field, the relationship between the psychology of learning and computer-based instruction, the development of computer tutorials, computer drills, computer simulations, instructional games and computerized testing. The course includes a laboratory component in which students learn to develop computer-based lessons using an Internet browser as a delivery device and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and JavaScript as tools for lesson development.

The course requires no previous knowledge of HTML or JavaScript but does demand skills acquired previously in basic microcomputer use, including some use of an Internet browser.

Case Studies in Management Information Systems

Overview

CMIS 311 is a three-credit, senior-level course on end-user information systems that blends business concepts with software solutions using a case study approach. In CMIS 311, you study a variety of concepts, grouped according to their relationship to four main areas of end-user information systems: organizational and technical foundations, business solutions, implementation and support, and impact on workplace performance. The case study approach followed in this course allows you to experience these concepts in the context of today’s business world. As well, learning activities are included that will expand your knowledge of desktop software products and teach you to apply the business concepts and theories you have studied. Specifically, you will work out solutions to the cases using presentation software, databases, spreadsheets, and Web development tools.

Overview

ASTR 200 introduces students to modern astronomy and astrophysics. The course presents and discusses the physical laws responsible for a variety of astronomical and astrophysical phenomena. Laboratory exercises emphasize the scientific techniques of astronomy and other sciences.

ASTR 200 is meant as a second astronomy course. ASTR 205 or equivalent is suggested for beginning students of astronomy.

The theoretical part treats aspects of life cycles and biological adaptations; ecology of mangrove ecosystems; fishery and aquaculture linkages to mangroves; principles of mangrove restoration and sustainable management and it is being taught on-campus with e-learning courseware. The file trip takes the students to the Ranong biosphere for hands–on experiences of the theoretical concepts.
