Rationale:

To provide a balanced and comprehensive understanding of the methods and approaches that are useful in dealing with the great variety of geologic conditions encountered during the design, construction and operation phases of Hydropower Projects.

Catalog Description:

Detailed description of soils and rock masses with emphasis on the physical properties relevant for Hydropower Projects; Identification of the influence of the engineering geology of the projects; Geological processes during lifetime of projects; and Practical application with case studies and histories.

II. Geological Structure Analysis
Geological structures (faults, folds)
Discontinuities
Hemispherical projection (basics and borehole analysis)

III. Processes in Engineering Geology
Weathering
Erosion, transportation and sedimentation
Groundwater

IV. Geotechiques Applied to Dams
Geology and selection of appropriate dam types (rock fill dam, concrete arch and gravity dam, Roller Compacted Concrete in gravity and arch dams, concrete-faced-rock fill dam a.o.)
Dam Design with respect to available construction materials
Stability of cut slopes
Foundation treatment (grouting)
Aggregates (quarrying and usability of geological materials)

V. Geotechniques Applied to Hydropower Structures and Reservoirs
Engineering geology in construction of underground structures (tunnels and pressure tunnels, shafts, powerhouse, outlet)
Reservoir rim stability, natural slope stability
Seismicity and reservoir induced seismic events

VI. Geotechniques in Hydropower Practice
