First and Second Year:
Students are introduced to all the major areas of psychology in the first two years of the degree programme. This comprehensive coverage focuses on theoretical aspects and techniques of psychological investigation. There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of psychological principles.
The Personal Touch: Student Support & Guidance
All first and second year students are assigned a personal tutor. Students’ academic progress is monitored each term in mentoring sessions with their tutor. Tutorial meetings are designed to develop students’ presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
Year Three: Getting Some Work Experience
The Placement Year of the Four Year Programme.
For students on the four year programme the third year is spent in relevant work experience which can provide insight into the application of psychological principles in the outside world, and allows students to see what a career in a particular branch of applied psychology or business might be like.
Your academic supervisor advises you throughout your placement year.
You write a log book, a placement report, and project related to your work experience that is assessed and counts towards your final degree classification.
The Final Year: Starting to Specialise
Having gained a broad base of knowledge in psychology and expertise in some of its methods of investigation, you are encouraged to consider practical applications of psychological principles in more detail during the final year.
By the start of your final year you will have some idea of those areas of psychology in which you are particularly interested, and these interests will probably link with your career plans. For this reason the Human Psychology degree programme provides the opportunity for some specialisation in certain areas in the final year, through a choice of options and in conducting your final year project.
The final-year options give you the opportunity to study some key areas of psychology in depth and to develop some of the necessary and professional skills and expertise of applied psychologists.
These specialist options will be modified and developed in keeping with emerging research areas and professional developments. They are also based around the areas of expertise of our teaching staff and the interests and needs of our students. For these reasons the list of options offered to students may vary over time.

Doing Your Own Research: The Final Year Project.
In the final-year project you use skills and techniques that you have acquired during the course to develop a project related to an area of common interest with your supervisor.
Human Psychology students are expected to collect original data and to write up their research project to a good scientific standard.
The dissertation contributes to your final degree classification. Students are encouraged to undertake projects falling within the research interests and expertise of the staff
